Endemic species: what they are and what advantages they have

Endemic species are those whose distribution is limited. In addition, it is not possible to find them -naturally- in another part of the world . In this article we will tell you what its characteristics and advantages are.

Knowing the endemic species

The term 'endemism' is used for both animals and plants for define those species whose distribution is reduced to a specific place, such as an island or a desert.

When talking about endemic species, it really refers to the that it is possible to find naturally only in that region, country or ecosystem.

Endemism can be present in all the natural spaces we know , like a peak mountainous, an island, a country, a jungle, a lake or a desert. The concept applies to species, but can also be used for subspecies, genera or animal or plant families.

Islands are the 'perfect' place for endemic species, due to their isolation. For example, Australia has not had contact with the rest of the planet for millions of years, so it has exclusive and different flora and fauna.

Other emblematic examples are the Galapagos Islands, the archipelago of Hawaii and the Canary Islands, all of volcanic origin and that have never been in contact with any continent. There we can find species that do not live in any other place, as it is the case of the Galápagos tortoise, the hoary bat or the blue finch of Gran Canaria.

The importance of endemic species

One piece of information very important in relation to these beings is that the smaller the area in which they live naturally, the greater the risk of suffering changes in the population, reduction of the survival rate or poaching. That is, they are more vulnerable to extinction.

In addition, they are quite sensitive to changes in their habitat, such as clearing the forest or creating dams.

Endemic species are much more than 'exclusive' for an island, jungle or region. Currently, the distribution of these animals has changed due to the action of man, who has taken copies to different parts of the globe, either as pets, for a zoo or to extend them in other latitudes.

The importance of conserving these species lies in the fact that their representation is limited to that environment and that its disappearance means the loss of special specimens, to call them in some way.

They have adapted to the habitat where they live and fulfill a function specific, in addition to being part of a trophic chain that would be altered by its disappearance n.And they do not have replacements!
